Day 5, July 10
Today was one of the special days of the camp, a day that we were all looking forward to. After breakfast, the Israeli delegation and the youngsters who wanted to join the delegation for the visit to the Jewish cemetery of Osno, grouped and crossed the lake in rowing boats. From the opposite side we then walked to the town, a pleasant 3 Kilometer walk through the forest, along a dirt track and into the town.
We were a group of 37, the Israeli delegation – 11 from Makif Zayin, Ashdod; five other Israelis; three Australians; six from the Ukraine delegation and the remainder from Poland. We entered the cemetery through the broken down entrance to find a closed-in space that was once (I presume) an exemplary final resting place of the Jewish population of Osna Lubuske. Today it is a desecrated, desolate piece of land, a tombstone here, another one further on. Shattered tombstones here and there, not many left, none in good condition. But enough to give one that emotional feeling of the place, what it represented and what it represents today. The remains of a flourishing Jewish community, enough to carry the feeling of “we are here, your fellow brothers, representatives of the Jewish people from the land of Israel.”
We all gathered on the highest point of the small cemetery, a point overlooking the entire enclosure. The first part of our gathering was a historical explanation of the area touching on the Jewish community pre-war and their fate at the start of the war. The pupils from Ashdod had been assigned a project to find out as much as possible about the Jewish community of the town at the outbreak of WWII. In their search they learnt that there were 33 people who were evicted in the Nazi program to clear the area making it Juden Frei (free of the Jews). We explained the importance for us of holding the Holocaust Memorial Service in Israel and at the schools, how it is done and how pleased we are to be able to share these moments with our friends.
The pupils from Makif Zayin, Asdod then carried out the memorial service that they had prepared starting with the song “Shir Lamaalot” followed by reading passages and ending with the singing of the three anthems, “Hatikva”, “Poland is not yet Lost” and “The Glory and the Freedom of Ukraine has not yet Deceased”. Our friends from Poland and Ukraine showed a lot of interest asking many questions. It was a wonderful feeling to see how these representatives from three different countries could gather in such close friendship with so much respect one for the other.
I could feel Korczak in every step that I took, I could feel him expressing his thoughts, as if saying – well done. These are not only the youth of today, they are the youth of the future and as an educator it made me feel so good to see these fine youth, observing their behavior, their attitude and their care for what was, what is and for what will still be.
יום 5, 10 ביולי
היום היה יום חשוב אותו תכננו עוד בהיותנו באשדוד. זה היה יום בו אנו ביקרנו בבית הקברות היהודי העתיק של העיירה הסמוכה למחנה.
היום היה שמשי במיוחד. שמחנו לדעת כי גם החברים הפולנים והאוקראינים השוהים במחנה הביעו את רצונם להצטרף אלינו. כדי להגיע לעיירה, היינו צריכים לעבור בסירות לצד השני של האגם ולאחר מכן ללכת ברגל בין השדות הפורחים ולאורך הדרך העוברת ביער. ואז הגענו לעיירה נקייה ומסודרת.
באמצע העיירה, במקום מגודר בגדר ישנה ולפעמים מפוררת, נמצא בית העלמין היהודי מהתקופה שקדמה למלחמת העולם השנייה. באותה התקופה הייתה זאת עיירה גרמנית ובה התגוררה קהילה יהודית קטנה. עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה יהודי המקום נשלחו לגטו ולאחר מכן הועברו למחנות ההשמדה שם מצאו את מותם.
התלמידים שלנו איתרו שמות של 33 מיהודי דרוסן (Drossen), אשר נספו בשואה, והכינו לזכרם נרות נשמה עם כיתוב שמות הנספים והן הפרטים האחרים עליהם.
אבי צור, אחד המלווים שלנו, הסביר בשפה האנגלית לכ-20 התלמידים שלא מישראל על מסורת הזיכרון ביום השואה והגבורה בישראל. אחרי התרגום לשפה הפולנית, התחילו תלמידינו בטקס זיכרון מרגש.
משי ואסי פתחו בשירת שיר למעלות. הקולות הצלולים שלהן הכניסו את כולם למצב רוח רציני, שקט וקצת עצוב. התלמידים פתחו בטקס מרגש. במהלך הטקס דיברו התלמידים – טל, עידן, נתנאל, שיר ונעמי – על חובת הזיכרון וההנצחה של היהודים אשר נספו בשואה, כמו כן לזכור ולא לשכוח את כל הקורבנות של המשטר הנאצי הרצחני. הטקס הסתיים בשירת התקווה. לאחר מכן הפולנים שנמצאו איתנו שרו את המנון פולין ואילו המשתתפים האוקראינים שרו את ההמנון שלהם.
כל התלמידים והמורים שהגיעו למקום עמדו בשקט והתייחסו בכבוד רב למתרחש. לאחר סיום הטקס הדלקנו נרות לזכר הקורבנות וגם המשתתפים האחרים הדליקו נרות יחד איתנו. ההתרגשות הייתה רבה. ראינו שהאנשים היו עם דמעות בעיניים.
כאשת חינוך נדהמתי לראות את הקשר הרגשי שהתרקם בין התלמידים ללא קשר בארץ מצאם. כולם הרגישו כמו אחים, והתחושה התעצמה עוד יותר כשאני מבינה כי הימצאות במחנה עם הצעיף הירוק (husta) עושה מכל משתתפי המחנה עם נפלא אחד, העם של קורצ’אק.
