JULY 6, 2016 / Day 1
On July 5, the group landed at Schoenfeld Airport, Berlin at about 9:00 local time. Their luggage was stored at the Airport hotel and they then had a short visit to Berlin itself. At 18:00 we collected the luggage and set out for the campsite.
We arrived tired after a two hour drive to be greeted by an excited throng of campers. The integration was instant – hugs, smiles, a friendly get together of youngsters eagerly waiting to meet one another and to form new friendships. After dinner the group was divided into their pre-arranged pairs and were accompanied to their tents by the tent leader (There are a total of 18 tents). At 22:00 we all gathered at the fire-side for a camp meeting. The Israeli flag was already positioned next to the Polish and Ukrainian flags, a bond of different cultures meeting in peace and harmony. The Israeli delegation was called forward and the camp chief Beata placed the camp scarf round each of the delegation participants, officially welcoming us to the camp and informing us that we are now true members. It was so good to see how quickly the kids felt at home.
It was a cold night. At 8:00 in the morning, the wake-up call was broadcasted, soft music played over the loudspeaker system. 8:15 found the campers on the sport field taking a short run, stretching and basically speaking, waking up. Breakfast was at 9:00 followed by specially organized integration games which involved all the campers and was organized by a couple of young campers in true Korczak spirit with the counselors looking on from the side.
The campers gathered in the “Circus” (the name given to the big tent) where they played Polish games that were translated into English. More thought must be invested in how to cope with the different languages so that all the camp participants can take part with equal opportunities.

נחתנו בברלין בשעה 10:00 בבוקר אחרי מעט שעות שינה. ומיד התמלאנו אנרגיות והתחלנו את הדקות הראשונות שלנו בברלין. נסענו ברכבת למרכז ברלין, הנסיעה ברכבת הייתה נעימה בה ראינו את הנוף הירוק והקר יחד עם האוכלוסייה הגרמנית. אחרי שהגענו לתחנה, המשכנו למרכז העיר שם הגענו לשער ברנדנבורג ומשם התחלנו במסלול רגלי לעבר “צ’קפוינט צ’ארלי”. במרכז העיר, ישנה אנדרטה אפורה ועצומה שבה ישנם בלוקים אפורים בגבהים שונים המסודרים בצורה מדויקת בשורות וטורים. הסתובבנו בין הבלוקים, ללא הכרת משמעות האנדרטה וככל שהתקדמנו למרכזה של האנדרטה, הבנו שאנו שוקעים מטה אך לא הבנו את המשמעות. בתיה, הסבירה לנו שהאנדרטה מסמלת את היהודים בתוקפת מלחמת העולם השנייה.
הבלוקים האפורים מסמלים את היהודים והמשפחות בשואה הנראים כמצבות בבית קברות מפאת הסדר בשורות והטורים.
האנדרטה שקועה במרכזה, משום שככל שנכנסים לתוך ההיסטוריה אנחנו “נשאבים” אל תוכה של האנדרטה. המשכנו אל ” צ’קפוינט צ’ארלי ” והכרנו את סיפורה של חומת ברלין, החומה אמנם נהרסה אך הסימון של הצד המערבי והמזרחי של ברלין נשאר. הקשבנו לאירועים והמקרים התרחשו שם
והמשכנו לכיוון הבונדסטאג (בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה רייכסאט) וראינו את המבנה המרהיב שמתנוסס לידו דגל גרמניה. משם נסענו אל המחנה בפולין.
למחנה הגענו בשעה 19:00 ואותנו קיבלנו הפולנים בלבביות רבה וצפייה לראותנו. כל זוג הלך לאוהל שבתוכו היו עוד כמה נערים מפולין ואוקרינה. אכלנו את ארוחת הערב, והכרנו את החברים החדשים.
מנהגים אחרים, שפה שונה, עיניים אחרות ממדינות אחרות . לקראת סוף היום, כל המחנה התאסף סביב המדורה, ועמדנו אחת ליד השני במעגל גדול והחל מסדר. כל אחראי אוהל דיווח לראשי המכנה שהכל כשורה. לאחר מכן, קראו למשלחת שלנו והעניקו לנו את העניבות של המחנה. לבסוף, שרנו את שיר המחנה המדבר על האיחודה של קבוצה בלילה סביב המדורה.
